What movies actually NEED a remake/reboot?

I’ve been seeing a whole lot of movies being rebooted, most of them will be hitting theaters around you this year and the next. It just seems really strange to say the least; a lot of these movies don’t need a remake. C’mon seriously… Footloose? Conan? The Crow? Robocop? Short Circuit? Total Recall (WITH COLIN FARRELL & AIMING FOR PG-13!?)? This is just a handful of those movies. Just the thought of these movies hitting the scene again makes me kinda cringe and make my “WTF?” face.

For instance the Conan reboot, it’s about as good as the 2007 game was. For those of you who didn’t play the Conan game, it’s not a compliment to the movie. The Crow!? Seriously? The movie Brandon Lee unfortunately passed away due to a gunshot wound to the abdomen (accidental). Thus rocket launching this films original popularity to another level, turning it into an instant cult classic. I’m sure everyone agrees the ridiculous straight to DVD sequels were harmful enough, remaking ‘The Crow’ is like tearing down Brandon Lee’s legacy. They should have a “dedicated to the memory of Brandon Lee” message thrown in there before the credits roll. That would help a little, but only a little! Okay ‘Short Circuit’, let’s face it “80’s Robotics” made that movie. I just can’t imagine anything other than that crazy “Johnny 5” robot with treads and odd facial expressions. Robocop. Again, “80’s movie Robots”. Footloose… No, just no. Last but certainly not least, TOTAL RECALL. Not only is this formerly awesome Sci-Fi Action is aiming for a PG-13 rating, but Arnolds shoes will be filled by none other than Colin Farrell!!!! The only good thing I can say about this remake is the choice made for the films antagonist. Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad, Malcolm in the Middle) is set to play the villainous “Vilos Cohagen”. I definitely DO NOT want to hear the words “DAMNIT COHAGEN, GIVE THE PEOPLE THE AIR!” leave Colin Farrell’s lips in this movie, PLEASE NO.
This whole remake/reboot phase we’re going through with movies lately is a little alarming, is Hollywood running out of ideas or originality? It’s hard to put all your faith in somebodies ability to remake one of your favorite old school films.
For those of you that can read it.
"Getting to the chopper since 1987" LOL

There’s 3 different levels most of the fans I’ve spoken to “rank” these remake/reboots.

Level 1: The movies that just don’t need a remake/reboot, and have no interest in seeing.

Level 2: The remake/reboots that you cross your fingers close your eyes and hope for the best.

Level 3: The movies you definitely want to see again with all the new CGI and special effects.

Not all these remakes are disappointing, some of them actually have my interest peaked and my imagination running wild on the possibilities with these titles. For example here are a couple remake/reboots I’m hoping surpass their former glory. “The Warriors”. “OldBoy”. “Evil Dead”. “Point Break”. “Mortal Kombat”.  I loved the original ‘Warriors’, I’m not too concerned with who they cast for all the parts. Simply because I’m sure they’ll probably take a different route with the story hopefully make it a realistic and gritty. I actually wouldn’t mind seeing done ‘Sin City’ style. “CAN YOU DIG IT!?”

As far as ‘OldBoy’ is concerned I love the Original just the way it is. But I do see the reasoning behind it all, basically turning the Bad Ass original Korean revenge tale into a Hollywood hit for the masses that didn’t get the pleasure of seeing ‘Dae-su Oh’ run down a hall way of thugs beating their faces in with a hammer and his “self-trained” fist of fury. Instead you’ll most likely be looking at Josh Brolin playing the lead role, with Spike Lee in the director’s chair. So we’ll call ‘Oldboy’ a “Level 2” movie. I don’t know much about the ‘Evil Dead’ remake/reboot, but it’s said that Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell and Rob Tapert are the producers so rest assured the originators are behind the remake/reboot. I’m hoping the fans and I will get a great Cameo from Bruce Campbell, wouldn’t feel right without one. I’m a HUGE fan of the original ‘Point Break’ this is definitely a “Level 2” for me, along with ‘Oldboy’. For this remake/reboot to work the casting has got to be spot on and definitely capture that spirit and cool factor the original had. C’mon you’re gonna tell me after seeing the original the first time you didn’t think of taking up surfing lessons or robbing banks with your closest friends to fund your endless summers.

OMG and the remake/reboot of ‘Mortal Kombat’ with Kevin Tancharoen (Mortal Kombat: Legacy; Web series) in the director seat I’m sure we’re in for some serious bone crunching action, but PLEASE lets have some gruesome FATALITIES.

What Movies do you think actually need a remake/reboot? I’m all for a ‘Spawn’ Reboot but who could be able to play a better Clown/Violator than John Leguizamo…?
Zack Galifianakis! LOL.
Definitely a fake but very decent poster

Seriously surprise me with some titles worthy of a remake/reboot, and don’t forget to cast em’!

  1. Awesome, love the blog! Danny Devito is too old to effectively portray "Clowny", but perhaps "mini-me" is free. Seriously, I think Galifianakis would steal the show as the violator. For some reason, Russell Brand keeps popping up in my mind as someone who could pull it off.
